Recipient of SPA Basu Award
From: Jonathan Makela
The SPA Basu Award Committee is pleased to announce that Prof. Yao Chen of Shandong University in China has been selected to receive the inaugural Sunanda and Santimay Basu Early Career Award in Sun-Earth Systems Science. The Basu Award has been created through a generous gift to recognize an individual young scientist within seven years of receipt of the doctorate degree from a developing nation for outstanding contributions to research in Sun-Earth Systems science and for furthering the field for the benefit of society. This award recognizes the significant contributions to Space Physics that Prof. Chen has made with his 2D MHD solar wind model as well as his role in successfully developing a new space physics program at Shandong University. He was chosen from a field of 6 excellent applicants.
As part of the award, Prof. Chen has been invited to give a talk on his research in an SPA session at the upcoming 2008 AGU Fall Meeting, 15-19 December in San Francisco, California. Travel funds and living expenses will be provided to attend the meeting, where Professor Chen will receive a certificate of appreciation and three years' membership to AGU. The award will be presented at the SPA dinner which will be held during the Fall Meeting.
