Empirical modeling the 3D force-balanced magnetic field structure during substorm growth phase
Abstract:
The plasma and magnetic field structure during the substorm growth phase is crucial to understanding development and initiation of substorms. In this study, we first established 2D plasma sheet pressure (P) distributions by using advanced machine learning technique--Support Vector Regression Machine (SVRM) with a systematic approach that balances model smoothness with fitting accuracy. 100,000 P data point from Geotail and THEMIS during substorm growth phase was used to obtain the pressure model that reveals the manner in which the plasma sheet pressure depends upon various control parameters (e.g., energy loading from solar wind and the effects from previous substorm) without any assumptions concerning the analytical form of P. The model predicts the P on the equatorial plane of any input control parameters and the predicted P matches well with THEMIS observations as well. We then computed the 3-D magnetic field in force balance with the predicted P under different energy state of substorm growth phase. As energy loading increases: P and pressure gradient increases; Bz decreases in the near Earth region and increases in the tail; The J⊥ becomes larger and peak moves towards the Earth; The field line becomes mores stretched and maps to lower latitude. In addition, J⊥ peaks off equator at near Earth, but peaks at equator in the tail and no Bz minimum though positive dBz/dz has been shown. Furthermore, there is typical R-1 FACs in the tail and R-2 FACs in the inner magnetosphere at late growth phase.
