The Subauroral Polarization Stream (SAPS) is a large ionospheric plasma velocity in the horizontal direction associated with the magnetosphere-plasmasphere processes during geospace storms. The occurrence of SAPS is repeatable and regular and the high impact of this large dynamics on the ionosphere-thermosphere system is expected. We use observations during the March 17-18, 2015 great geomagnetic storm to demonstrate a sequence of I-T changes that are caused by SAPS directly and indirectly. These changes include frictional heating related neutral atmospheric uperwelling as well as plasma uperwelling (ion upflow), which occur often in auroral areas but not well-known for subauroral latitudes.
